The Dark Side of Being a DJ

In the vibrant world of DJs, where beats never stop and energy is contagious, the journey can be both exhilarating and challenging. From late-night gigs to post-show temptations, the lifestyle often comes with its own set of hurdles. But for seasoned DJs like Rod, the path to success has been marked by resilience, transformation, and a commitment to well-being.

In a recent candid conversation among seasoned DJs, the topic veered from music preferences to health and the changing landscape of the industry. What started as a discussion about the intricacies of crafting a perfect mix evolved into a reflection on personal habits, challenges, and the uncertain future of live music.

Rod's journey began over two decades ago when he received a life-altering diagnosis: type two diabetes. Despite the challenges this presented, Rod found himself deeply entrenched in the nightlife scene as a DJ, where unhealthy habits often ran rampant.

"I was hard-headed," Rod recalls. "I wanted to fit in, to be part of the atmosphere. But deep down, I knew I needed to make a change."

The turning point came when Rod found himself hospitalized due to dangerously high blood sugar levels. It was a wake-up call that spurred him to take control of his health and well-being.

Rod's commitment to change was further fueled by his experiences in the Navy, where physical fitness was paramount. Despite his initial aversion to running, Rod embraced the challenge, participating in events like the Bentonville half marathon, even as he approached his 40s.

"It was a struggle," Rod admits. "But with the support of friends and a newfound dedication to my health, I persevered."

As Rod delved deeper into his health journey, he encountered the 75 Hard program, created by Andy Frisella. This rigorous fitness and mindset challenge provided the structure and discipline Rod needed to stay on track.

But Rod's journey wasn't just about physical health—it was also a journey of self-discovery and personal development. Battling depression and anxiety, Rod turned to inspirational content and self-help resources to navigate through dark times.

"It was a process," Rod reflects. "But I knew I had to keep pushing forward, not just for myself, but for my son and my loved ones."

Through consistent exercise, healthy habits, and a renewed focus on his well-being, Rod experienced a transformation both inside and out. His dedication not only improved his physical health but also strengthened his relationships and rekindled a lost love.

"Health is about more than just the body," Rod emphasizes. "It's about nurturing your mind, spirit, and relationships."

Today, Rod continues to inspire others through his DJing and wellness journey. He shares his experiences openly, encouraging others to prioritize their health and pursue their passions with vigor and determination.

"Life is a journey," Rod says with a smile. "And every step, no matter how challenging, brings us closer to our true selves."

As Rod's story demonstrates, true transformation is possible with dedication, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change. From the DJ booth to the wellness stage, Rod's journey is a testament to the power of self-discovery and the importance of prioritizing health and happiness.

One DJ questioned the resurgence of live music in today's era, pondering whether oversaturation and changing consumer habits were stifling its growth. With an abundance of music available at our fingertips, the panelists expressed concern over the lack of timeless hits in recent years. The conversation delved into the role of technology, with platforms like TikTok shaping musical trends in unprecedented ways.

Despite the uncertainties, there was a shared passion for live performances and a desire to see the industry thrive. The DJs reminisced about past concerts and expressed hopes of witnessing their favorite bands perform live again. The nostalgia for iconic bands like Linkin Park and Creed was palpable, sparking a discussion about the magic of live music experiences.

The message was clear: despite the challenges and uncertainties, the love for music and live performances remains unwavering. As they embark on their next gig, these DJs are ready to embrace whatever the future holds, one beat at a time.
